“A-rod took a banned substance!”
As the #1 Sports fan you may know, with the National pastime being my favorite sport, many of you may be surprised to know my initial feelings about the above headline.
1) I don’t care
2) I’m not surprised
3) I actually agree with Curt Schilling on something, which is shocking in itself, since he’s still a pompous prick in my book.
4) See # 1
Now before I begin my rant, let me inform you that I’ve read the Mitchell Report numerous times, as well as Jose Canseco’s first book and so many books about Mr. Bonds, that I’ve lost count. So with all of that coupled with my above average knowledge of the game in general, I’m well versed on the subject of drugs and baseball. Hell, I’ll be the first to admit that it wasn’t the rest of the league that kept the New York Mets teams after 1986 from repeating as World Champions, it was Cocaine.
Drugs have been part of the general sports landscape for the last 40 years, Baseball as a whole was just overly naïve on very subject till the very end. So I’ll just assume everyone did something during that time period and move on. Since when I sit down in my living room this year to watch my beloved Mets or head over to PNC to see the Bucs, I’m not going to concern myself with what happened previously. My only concern is just the next 9 innings and after that the next 9, scandal or not.
Baseball has been a scandalous sport from day 1, whether it was the Black Sox scandal of 1919, celebrating known racists such as Ty Cobb, balls being juiced, scuffed, deadened or you name it, to Hank Aaron receiving Death threats for having the gall to break a white man’s record to the present day Steroid Era controversies that won’t die. So it amazes me that the general populace refers to this sport as being good natured and clean cut. Really now, what game are they watching?
I fell in love with the game by just playing catch with my Dad, preparing for little league tryouts in 1985, not by admiring false idols who were only bound to disappoint me. Did I want to be like Dr. K Dwight Gooden, sure who didn’t? I later learned he was a cokehead, yet I still love him and baseball. From those early years in little league, I discovered I was better than most and had a natural affinity for the blessed game. I wasn’t the fastest nor the strongest or even the most talented but I was able to work with what I had to be a 2 year varsity starter at my High School. Even in my formative years the delusions of grandeur of making it to the show, were nothing more than just delusions. Numbers across the board were starting to explode but I knew I had nothing in common with those stars. I just loved playing the game, with the little power and pop I had in my throwing arm honed from the lessons I learned from playing catch with my dad. Baseball has never disappointed me; in my opinion it’s perfect. It’s the people that are fucked up. My love of the game was fostered far away from Major league ballparks and will remain, regardless of what the contemporaries do. You have crooks and cheaters in every facet of life, so why does one expect a sport to be any different? Do not look to idols to help send a message, raise your own children and instill the values that you know to be true from your own upbringing. Athletes, Celebrities and or Musicians are not role models!
So A-rod took a banned substance, so what, he’s not hurting me, in fact the only person he’s hurting is himself and 26th man on the depth chart that just missed making it to the show. Those are the only guys that have a legitimate beef, along with those before them that achieved the hallowed records with only the help of caffeine and amphetamines (commonly referred to as greenies), you knew about that right? I agree with Schilling on the dubious nature, in which A-rod is only the latest to be thrown in the fire, aren’t there another 103 names on that list? Perhaps A-rod’s was the only one in a bold type font? In fact that only overly glib comment I have on the matter is the simple fact, that Mr. Rodriguez in once again making a big splash, no where near the month of October! Enough is enough, either take a step that effectuates the release of all the names or don’t, while it matters little to me, I know others don’t feel the same way. I believe that everyone would agree that it’s to move on and play ball. That’s right I said it, PLAY BALL BITCHES!!
